Red Croton Petra

Red Croton ‘Petra’ is a vibrant and popular tropical plant, prized for its thick, leathery leaves with intense patterns of red, orange, yellow, and green. Valued for its air-purifying qualities and its ability to add a dramatic accent to interior décor, it does require bright light and consistent humidity care to truly thrive.

Key Characteristics & Care

Light:
Requires bright, indirect light; the intensity of its colors is directly related to the amount of light it receives. Avoid strong midday direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, but ensure at least a few hours of morning sun. Insufficient light will cause new leaves to lose coloration and turn green.

Watering:
The most delicate aspect of care. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer of the substrate (1–1.5 inches / 2–3 cm) to dry between waterings. Overwatering leads to root rot, while underwatering causes leaf drop.

Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity (40–80% is ideal). Regular misting, the use of a pebble tray with water, or a humidifier is recommended, especially during winter when indoor heating is in use.

Temperature:
Maintain in a warm environment, ideally between 18–29°C (64–85°F). It is very sensitive to cold and must be protected from drafts below 15°C (59°F).

Pruning:
Responds well to light pruning to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Wearing gloves is recommended, as the sap may irritate the skin.
