Variegated Ficus Brasil
Commonly marketed in some regions as Ficus “Brasil” due to its distinctive color patterns, is a vibrant and popular variety of the Rubber Tree. It is prized for its large, leathery leaves with unique variegation blending shades of green, yellow, and cream, its excellent air-purifying qualities, and its majestic, upright presence—making it ideal for statement corners in homes and offices.
Key Characteristics & Care
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Good lighting is essential to maintain strong color contrast; in very low light, new leaves may lose their variegation. Avoid intense direct midday sun, which can scorch the foliage.
Watering:
Moderate and careful. Allow the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of the substrate to dry out before watering again. It is very sensitive to overwatering, which can cause leaf drop and root rot, but it also does not tolerate prolonged drought.
Humidity:
Adapts well to average household humidity. Wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth is recommended to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis. In very dry climates, occasional misting is beneficial.
Temperature:
Maintain within a warm range of 18–26°C (65–79°F). Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, as these can stress the plant and cause sudden leaf drop.
Pruning:
