Aralia Fabia
Aralia Fabia, more accurately Polyscias scutellaria ‘Fabian’ (also known as Fabian Aralia or Plum Leaf Aralia), is an elegant and popular tropical plant recognized for its thick, woody trunk that gives it the appearance of a miniature tree. It is prized for its rounded, dark green leaves with a distinctive purple underside, its air-purifying qualities, and its upright growth habit, making it an excellent choice for narrow spaces or corners.
Key Characteristics & Care
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate partial shade, but good lighting is essential to maintain dense foliage. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
This is the most critical aspect of care. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged; allow the top 1–1.5 inches (2–3 cm) of soil to dry before watering again. It is extremely sensitive to both overwatering (which causes root rot) and excessive dryness (which leads to leaf drop).
Humidity:
Requires high humidity to thrive. In dry or heated indoor environments, especially in 2025, using a humidifier or pebble trays with water is essential to prevent stress caused by dry air.
Temperature:
Maintain in a warm range between 18–24°C (65–75°F). It is very sensitive to cold; temperatures below 15°C (59°F) or cold drafts can cause significant leaf loss.
Pruning:
Responds very well to pruning, allowing control over height and encouraging bushier growth. It is an excellent candidate for bonsai techniques due to its woody trunk.
