Croto Batik

Codiaeum variegatum ‘Batik’, commonly known as Croton Batik, is a vibrant and popular tropical plant, prized for its long, narrow leaves with intricate, multicolored patterns reminiscent of the traditional textile dyeing technique known as batik. It is valued for its air-purifying qualities and moderate growth rate, making it an excellent choice for containers. However, it requires bright light and consistent humidity to maintain its vivid coloration and prevent leaf drop.

Key Characteristics & Care

Light:
Prefers bright, direct light (at least a few hours per day) to maintain intense leaf coloration. In low-light conditions, new growth will lose its variegation and turn solid green.

Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; allow the top 1–2 inches (2–3 cm) of soil to dry between waterings. It is highly sensitive to drought, which can cause immediate lower leaf drop.

Humidity:
Requires high ambient humidity. In dry indoor environments, the use of a humidifier, pebble trays, or frequent misting is recommended to prevent dry leaf tips.

Temperature:
Keep above 16°C (60°F), with an optimal range of 18–27°C (65–80°F). Protect strictly from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Pruning:
Responds well to pruning to control size and encourage fuller growth. Gloves are recommended, as its milky sap can cause skin irritation.
